In 2019, the winner was an entry that the judge from @cirquedusoleil, Melissa Thompson, described as compelling in its notion of transformation and the idea of costume as set; the shapeshifting quality of the piece and the high level of craftmanship set this work apart. . Sea Urchin Explosion was created by Jack Irving (@jackirvingstudio); this expansive wearable sculpture inflates to fend off the enemy if they get too close. Made using nylon fabric and powered by an inventive inflation system. .
