Zundert’s flower parade came into being in 1936 as a celebration of Queen Wilhelimina’s birthday at that time. The first parades were modest as far as size is concerned and mostly consisted of decorated bicycles and a single farmer’s cart. Yet the idea of a flower parade touched a string in the inhabitants.
During the war years of 1939 – 1944 business was down but immediately after the war, in 1945, things were revived. At a high speed the flower parade evolved to a great event even of major international size.
Building a float for the corso is mainly a social event. Builders of all ages work side by side for over three months to get the float of their hamlet ready on time. It has to be as perfect as possible in order to win the competition.
For years, seventeen hamlets participated in the corso. In recent years, three more decided to enter the competition. Building a float costs a lot of money-- Around 15.000 to 20.000 euros per float, and hundreds of people are needed. Now there are twenty hamlets competing in Bloemencorso Zundert.
Zundert’s flower parade has always had a quite strong artistic aspect. Since the fifties good contacts have existed with the Art Academy in neighbouring Breda. Professional artists are part of the jury of the floats and advise the designers
Just like the builders of the floats, these designers are all volunteers from Zundert. Inhabitants of Zundert educated at the Art Academy, often become designers of floats, inspired by this artistic aspect
Since the sixties the floats have continually increased in size but especially during the eighties the increase is strong. The parade is a competition: the village districts compete with one another and winning the parade is one of the finest things an inhabitant of Zundert can live up to. That’s why the competing districts do the utmost to outdo the others.
During the Zundert Flower Parade, the town pulls out all the stops. On Sunday and Monday, there are all kinds of music and theater performances for your enjoyment. The local bars and restaurants join in with special offers and activities. Zundert is on the border with Belgium, so the flower parade is a wonderful outing for both Dutch and Belgians.
