Through literature, philosophy and daily life, Thao Nguyen Phan observes ambiguous issues in social convention, history and tradition. An honours graduate from Singapore’s Lasalle College of the Arts in 2009, four years later Phan received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Phan has exhibited widely in Southeast Asia and is a 2016-2017 Rolex Protégée, mentored by internationally acclaimed, New York-based, performance and video artist, Joan Jonas.
She was 2018 recipient of the Han Nefkens Foundation – LOOP Video Art Award and in 2019, she is participating at Lyon Biennial and will be at LOOP Fair with Galerie Zink Waldkirchen. The Han Nefkens Foundation has supported the production and presentation of her new work ‘Becoming Alluvium’, which will be presented at the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, during LOOP Festival. During 2020, this work will travel to the WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels, and at the Chisenhale Gallery, London.
