‘Womxn-Women’, (2018) by #AndreaBowers, presented by @jessicasilvermangallery – and captured by @laurasotodb – at last year’s Miami Beach show. Swipe to see the gallery’s video of the work in action.
Bowers has made neon works that explore political rhetoric for almost a decade. In ‘Women/Womxn’ – her first work to combine neon with a lightbox – the rose echoes the anti-war icons adopted by European political parties in the 1970s and ‘80s. And, when rendered in dark pink, it retains its associations with romance and beauty. Relatively new to the feminist movement, womxn, is an alternative term used to explicitly include transgender and nonbinary women, and women of color.
Bowers’s textual wall works are always timely; they explore highly charged language when its meaning is most contested. They are not slogans, preaching to the converted, as much as calls to reflection. #artbasel #artbaselmiamibeach #dayofthegirl #nationalcomingoutday #womxn
