Inspired by nature’s regeneration and renewal, #KentaroKawabata’s ceramic works, known as ‘Soos’, encompass a sense of vitality. The artist’s involved process originates with scrap porcelain from other projects. Once a form is assembled, Kawabata glazes with silver before its dipped multiple times into the onsen (Japanese hot spring). The onsen, which contains high levels of sulfur, generates the piece’s unique coloration and geological-like textures. The artist’s finishing touch: adorn select details with platinum. The name ‘Soos’ is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word ‘source’, in addition to the distress signal S.O.S. — @KentaroKawabata812, ‘Soos’, (2019), via @TakaishiiGallery, part of this year’s #ArtBaselMiamiBeach Galleries sector. #artbasel #japaneseart #ceramics #ceramicartist
