Mariken Wessels’ photographs and sculptures at @TheRavestijnGallery stand during Art Rotterdam 2019, photographed by visitor Elza. Wessels started her career in acting, which may explain her interest in how bodies move. After attending the Rietveld Academy, she worked on artist’s books, photography, film, installation as well as sculptures. Since 2017, her work has been inspired by Eadward Muybridge. Muybridge was a photographer and self-proclaimed scientist who used film in the 1870s to analyse how people and animals moved (for instance to answer the question: do all four legs of a horse leave the ground at some point when they gallop? Answer: they do). Like Muybridge, Wessels is fascinated by themes of corporality, movement, and weight(lessness). Her works and artist’s books have been collected by (amongst others) @CentrePompidou, @TheMuseumOfModernArt, the @StedelijkMuseum @FoMuAntwerp and the @VerbekeFoundation.
