‘The history of painting was invented by men, so I wanted to work with a medium that was more associated with women,’ #GhadaAmer has said about her recent foray into ceramics. Best known for her erotic, embroidered canvases that negotiate sexuality, female identity, and Islamic culture, the Egyptian artist’s ceramic pieces represent a rebellion against painting as a historically male-dominated artistic genre. Although much of Amer’s work depicts female nudes plucked from soft-core porn magazines and many profiles suggest a soapbox agenda, the artist stresses that her work is not intended to carry a message to others. Rather, her work is intended to inform herself: ‘My drawings are my diary,’ she expressed in a 2008 video published by The @BrooklynMuseum in connection with her first U.S. survey, ‘Ghada Amer: Love Has No End’.
