#KatheKollwitz (b. 1867) was ahead of her time. As an artist and a mother, Kollwitz was instrumental in establishing new ways in which modern women could portray themselves in art outside of traditional guises. Throughout her long career, she masterfully portrayed women working, mourning, and leading revolutions – in addition to creating several self-portraits and exploring the subject of motherhood in all of its complexity. In the words of Hans Pels-Leusden, Kollwitz’s self-portraits – like the one seen above – ‘explode with life-force, audacity and self-confidence.’ To many, Kollwitz is considered the last great practitioner of #GermanExpressionism and one of the most important German artists of the 20th century.
