Comic book superheroes, villains, dinosaurs, devils, spaceships, film noir, and sci-fi illustrations are among #AndyHope1930’s artistic inspirations. Born Andreas Hofer in 1963 – and known as Andy Hope 1930 since 2010 – the German artist mixes these elements with emblems of the Third Reich, legendary outsiders, and ideas about the future.

His chosen identity, Andy Hope 1930, stands for an interim person between the artist and his work. The word ‘Hope’ propagates optimism, whereas the year 1930 is pegged to time of social, political, and artistic crises that challenged the historical avant-garde in European modernity. Despite formally adopting his moniker only 9 years ago, Hope has been signing his pieces this way since the beginning of his career. With it, as Susanne Gaensheimer has remarked, the artist ‘marks them as timeless or also implies the timelessness of his own existence.’ (from the catalog Welt ohne Ende (World without End), p. 11-12).
