For #ChristinaDeMiddel (@lademiddel), a photograph can be half truth, half creation. The Spanish artist spent a decade as a photojournalist before turning her lens towards blurring the lines of fact and fiction in pursuit of revealing a deeper understanding of the world we live in. Her subject matter is diverse and based on true stories, ranging from a failed Zambian space program to environmental challenges prompted by over-consumption. In ‘UNKNOWN SOLDIER (d)’, presented by @GaleriaAizpuru at #ArtBasel2019, she pays tribute to Fumilayo Ransome-Kuti – a feminist icon in Nigeria, and mother of legendary musician #FelaKuti – by immortalizing the tragic military invasion of their home 40 years ago, where she was thrown off a balcony. The images in the ‘UNKNOWN SOLDIER’ series reimagine the narrative by instead showing her looking out of her window at falling soldiers. #artbasel
