Museum Restoration Fund ~ As we communicated in our previous post, next to the 'Equestrian Portrait of Charles I' by Anthony van Dyck in the @nationalgallery, TEFAF supports the restoration of this newly discovered folding screen in @museumvolkenkunde too! ~ 'View on Deshima in the bay of Nagasaki' is an unknown en unique folding screen dating circa 1836 and painted by the Japanese artist Kawahara Keiga (1786-1860). The screen illustrated historic trade connections between The Netherlands and Japan as the depiction is showing the Dutch ship 'Marij en Hillegonda' that only set sail to Japan once. ~ At the moment preparations for the restoration of the folding screen are made. The screen will be on display in a central spot within the Volkenkunde Museum once the entire project is finished. Interesting about this restoration is that many different experts in restoration, conservation, and Japanese art need to work on the screen at the Restorient conservation studio. The first preparations of the restoration process are done. The team is currently waiting for Restoration Specialist Dhr. Naoharu Usami from Kyoto who will continue work on the 8 panels of the screen mid-August. ~ Aside from several experts that need to help in different stages of the restoration process, the restoration studio Restorient also needs to wait on materials often coming from Japan in order to restore certain parts of the screen and it's layers. This shows that the restoration of the screen is a very complex project, TEFAF is proud to be a supporting party! ~ Please visit the Museum Volkenkunde website to read (in Dutch) about the project so far in their three blogposts: https://www.volkenkunde.nl/nl/neem-een-kijkje-achter-het-scherm-van-Keiga ~ Kawahara Keiga Folding screen with bay of Nagasaki Ink and pigments on silk, mounted on a wooden frame 171.2 x 457.6 cm 1836 Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden, The Netherlands ~ #TEFAF #TEFAFMaastricht #TEFAFMaastricht2019 #MuseumRestorationFund #TEFAFMuseumRestorationFund #Museum #restoration #kamerscherm #foldingscreen #Keiga #KawaharaKeiga #Japan #JapaneseArt #NinetheenthCentury #Nagasaki #view #beauty #historicpiece
