Movies that Matter Festival kicks off in The Hague tomorrow! Here's a great film to watch: RAFIKI by Kenyan female filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu. We tried to get this title for our festival last year, but could not get it unfortunately. Film = in English with Dutch subs. * * * Story: "Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives" but Kena and Ziki long for something more. When love blossoms between them, the two girls will be forced to choose between happiness and safety. . . The film is banned in Kenya. Last year, after many protests, the Kenyan high court temporarily lifted the ban. The ruling allowed Kenyan adults to view the film for just one week. Kenya's Film and Classification Board (KFCB) said RAFIKI was banned because of intent to "promote lesbianism" in the country. (Source CNN) . . .
