Leonardo DiCaprio fought for Claire Danes to win the role of Juliet after she impressed him with her line delivery and the fact that she was the only actress to look him straight in the eye. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Aaliyah, Kate Winslet, and Christina Ricci were considered for Juliet. Natalie Portman even flew to Sydney for the audition with Leonardo DiCaprio, but Director Baz Luhrmann decided she was too young for the role.
