#NowShowing: #LastAndFirstMen⠀
⠀
A stunning audio-visual, science-fiction essay on human mortality and the end of all things from the late Jóhann Jóhannsson, narrated by Tilda Swinton.⠀
⠀
Originally conceived as a multimedia work which premiered at the @mifestival in 2017, #LastAndFirstMen is the directorial debut of Denis Villeneuve’s go-to film composer, Jóhann Jóhansson (or, as he preferred, composer who also scores films, who tragically died in 2018).⠀
⠀
Based on the eponymous 1930 Olaf Stapledon novel, and blurring the boundary between documentary and fiction, Tilda Swinton (who better) voices a human from its 18th distinct evolution from some two billion years in the future (the Last Men), reaching back to the First Men (us) for help, as the end of time approaches. ⠀
⠀
Beautifully filmed in monochrome 16mm amongst the futuristic, decaying backdrop of the Spomenik, a series of now-crumbling, concrete WWII monuments across the former Yugoslavia.⠀
