Thomas Clay brought his full-length feature film debut – the wildly controversial #TheGreatEcstasy of Robert Carmichael back in 2005 – and his follow-up film, #SoiCowboy (2009), to EIFF, so it’s especially pleasing to be screening this latest offering (indeed his first film since 2009) in this series. ⠀

Maxine Peake plays the titular character, the younger wife and mother of an authoritarian, puritan farmer (Charles Dance) and a young son, respectively. Into their lives comes a young couple on the run, who have no clothes and some very radical views (for the time, 1657) on sexual liberation and equality of the sexes, that slowly but surely start to turn Fanny’s head… Think Witchfinder General with a modern spin, complete with a fake old-school BBFC certificate!⠀
