In her works of film, installation, and sculpture, artist Ja’Tovia Gary charts the ways structures of power shape our perceptions around representation, race, gender, sexuality, and violence. In this work, ‘Citational Ethic,’ Gary quotes the writer and scholar Saidiya Hartman. Her words offer a powerful framework for confronting the afterlife of slavery and liberating the distorted histories through which Black life is often viewed. Topped by an outline of outstretched palms, the work makes direct reference to neon church signs and the interiority of the Black experience. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To learn more, visit @PaulaCooperGallery's Online Viewing Room by clicking through the link in our profile. — Ja'Tovia Gary, ‘Citational Ethic’ (2020), courtesy of Paula Cooper Gallery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #artbaselOVR #jatoviagary #paulacooper #paulacoopergallery
