In observance of Juneteenth, @Metro Pictures presents a special, single-screen presentation of Isaac Julien’s ‘Lessons of the Hour,’ a film that explores the incomparable achievements of Frederick Douglass, one of America’s leading abolitionist figures.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In a statement shared here with permission from Isaac Julien and Metro Pictures, the artist explains the work as ‘a moving-image portrait and meditation on the life and work of 19th-century abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a former slave who rose up through his brilliance and determination to become an incredibly eloquent orator, author, publisher, and activist. Understanding his work in abolitionism is necessary to understanding where the United States is today and how we still have so far to go to achieve full equality for all citizens.’
