Neon signage has been a powerful medium for artists of the 20th and 21st century. In ‘Five Words in Coloured Neon’ (2003), Canadian artist Ron Terada adopts the language of the color-coded terrorism threat advisory scale used by the United States. Throughout his practice, Terada transforms found text such as this into arresting compositions that function as a complex blurring of politics, art, and history.
