We are saddened to hear of the passing of influential Egyptian artist Adam Henein, who was renowned for his non-traditional sculptures and paintings which combined ancient pharaonic themes with sleek modernism. Born in Cairo in 1929 to a family of metalworkers, a childhood trip to Cairo’s Egyptian Antiquities Museum proved formative. “Suddenly I had this weird feeling that I was discovering another world, away from the textbooks, physics, and chemistry classes ” said the artist. Henein went on to study in Cairo and Munich before settling in Paris for 20 years, where he spent time experimenting artistically and acquainting himself with the works of Western sculptors. After this times he returned to Cairo, where he produced some of his most lauded commissions, including the restoration of the Sphinx of Giza in 1998. . In 1996, Henein established the annual Aswan International Sculpture Symposium in the city of Aswan and in 2014, he converted his home in Giza into an eponymous museum. Among his many accolades are Egypt’s State Medal, the Mubarak Award, and the State Merit Award. We were honoured to host galleries displaying works by Heinen in the Art Dubai Modern section in 2010 with Artspace, and 2014 with Karim Francis Gallery.
