Gebaut wurde das Torhaus im Jahr 1984. Durch die quadratische, verglaste Öffnung im Inneren des Hochhauses soll der Eindruck eines Tores entstehen. Ungers Intention lag darin, eine Verbindung von Messe und Stadt zu schaffen – das „Tor zu Frankfurt“. Was durch die S-Bahn-Station im unteren Teil des Torhauses auch praktisch umgesetzt wurde. .
