Serving looks in bonnets and hoods, Koji Tanada's wooden sculptures often sport some type of stylish headgear. In ‘12 appeared girls No.3’ (2016), the accessory is either a futuristic helmet or a brutalist coif. In other cases, the sculpture's long hair forms a protective blanket over their shoulders. Hair – and the covering thereof – has played a surprisingly large role in societies around the world for millennia; it continues to intrigue, as the Japanese artist's practice shows.
