With its warm hues and pattern, it might surprise you to learn that ‘Yellow Ochre Painting’ was made by Ad Reinhardt in 1948, the same year he famously switched to making all-black works.
The oil on canvas, with its rhythmic hatching, is a step on this journey, as he stripped away Abstract Expressionist gesture in favor of hard-edged monochromes.

Yet evident in this canvas is an echo of the rigor and restraint he would bring to his most famous works, which, in their uncompromising geometries, function as forerunners of Minimalism and Conceptual art. As Reinhardt once said, ‘The only way to say what abstract is, is to say what it is not.’
