In a sense, Zak Prekop is a ‘traditional’ abstract painter, reminiscent of DeKooning, Kline, and Motherwell. However, his deliberate, impeccable precision sets him firmly apart from his AbEx predecessors.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
‘Standing’ (2019), like many of Prekop’s oil on muslin works, is not made by painting lines, but rather, by applying numerous, sometimes uncountable, layers and grids atop a ground of loose, overall brushstrokes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The intricate process of applying paint on paint is how he achieves the fine degree of patterning that compose the final works.

At Art Basel Miami Beach 2019, @EssexStreetGallery presented three new Prekop works, ‘Standing’ (pictured), ‘Darkroom’, and ‘Remko’. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
