During the 80s, British photographer Jo Spence (London, 1934-1992) documented her body as it was going through various stages of breast cancer. Spence used self-portraiture to reclaim her body from the illness and subvert the notion of an idealised female form. From this, Spence later developed a method of working called 'phototherapy', a means of using the medium in aid psychological health. Jo Spence, 'Crisis Project / Picture of Health?
