This week we'll be looking back at some 2017 highlights. First up is 'Brave Beauties' by Zanele Muholi, this series was exhibited as part of Rearranging Boundaries, curated by Aaron Bradbrook.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Brave Beauties was first initiated in 2013 and formalised in 2014, South Africa's 20th anniversary of democracy. These works acknowledge the radical transformation of South African society even though many shadows remain, especially in terms of crimes against the LGBTI community.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ About 'Brave Beauties', Muholi says: Each person is striking their own confident pose, expressing and claiming their femininity and affirming their existence and love for looking beautiful. Most of the participants have won Miss Gay beauty pageants in their communities. The contest takes place in various locations around South Africa, especially in the townships, as a way of creating awareness through cultural activities - drag performance, music and dance.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Image: Zanele Muholi, Sfiso Candice Nkosi, Tsakane, Johannesburg, 2013, image courtesy of Stevenson, Cape Town/Johannesburg and Yancey Richardson, New York (detail)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #ballaratfoto #ZaneleMuholi #visitballarat #photography #bestofballarat #ballaratlife #whatsonballarat #ballaratinternationalfotobiennale #ballarat⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #loveballarat #PicOfTheWeek #creativeballarat #contemporaryart
