We deeply mourn the loss of a Butoh legend. Yoshito Ohno, who passed away on 8 January 2020 at the age of 81, dedicated his life to Butoh dance and carried on the legacy of his father, Kazuo Ohno. Yoshito Ohno was born in Tokyo in 1938. His stage debut was in 1959 in a piece by Tatsumi Hijikata. In addition to numerous appearances as a dancer, he also worked as an author, teacher, choreographer and director. He collaborated with his father Kazuo Ohno, the co-founder of Butoh Tatsumi Hijikata, the Tanztheater Wupptertal dancers Julie Anne Stanzak and Eddie Martinez as well as with the band Antony and the Johnsons. We are fortunate to have been able to welcome Yoshito Ohno at ImPulsTanz in 1989. Together with the company Kazuo, he presented the pieces "Admiring La Argentina" and "Water Lilies". In addition, he also taught Butoh in a workshop. We send our deep-felt condolences to his family and to all who mourn over Yoshito Ohno with us. Photo: Yoshida Ohno © Nourit Masson-Sekine
