Express yourself, don’t repress yourself.

2 of Nancy Grossman’s life-size leather-clad heads (via @MichaelRosenfeldGallery) – an ongoing body of work that began in the late 1960s and quickly made her both ‘renowned and suspect’ (Arlene Raven). Frequently described as ‘disturbing,’ these works ‘blew conventional images of femininity to smithereens,’ as critic Holland Cotter noted.
While Grossman regularly refers to the heads as self-portraits, they’re not made to resemble the artist herself. Rather, the early sculptures were inspired, in part, by the liberation movements of the late ‘60s and the Vietnam War, responding to the violence and social upheaval of the era. Today, Grossman’s heads continue to address the anxiety and turmoil that weigh upon the individual and contemporary society.
