’I’ve always been fascinated by body language that people have, what they say with their bodies.’ – Manuel Neri — Manuel Neri (b. 1930) is an American sculptor associated with the Bay Area Figurative movement of the 1950s & ‘60s. His influences include beatnik philosophy, funk jazz, and Latin American poetry. For Art Basel Miami Beach 2019, @Hackett.Mill brought together a group of sculptures by Neri created between 1956 and 1960, which played a notable role in the development of a new artistic voice on the West coast separate from Abstract Expressionism, which dominated across the US at the time. His work reveals a fascination with body language. On this topic he has shared, ‘that says so much of the person for me, and this has almost nothing to do with the face. That’s my interest there.
