❓Is it the role of the artist to give meaning to their work? François Morellet disagreed, once saying, ‘It’s the audience that gives the sens to my art.’ The French artist was a founder of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV), and artist collective in Paris of opto-kinetic artists working from 1960–68/69, including Jean-Pierre Vasarely, Julio Le Parc, and others. Morellet was prolific and used simple systems in his abstract works as a way of reducing his personal input to an absolute minimum. Above are 3 of the 6 paintings from the late 1960s & early ‘70s, presented by @DanGaleria in the Kabinett sector at Art Basel Miami Beach 2019.
