Why illuminating York 2016:
As the nights draw in, Illuminating York will shine more brightly than ever before. The Festival attracts more than 50,000 people to the city to experience York in a new light. Cutting-edge technology creates a colourful celebration of York’s unique heritage, from spectacular sites to hidden gems.
A fantastic programme of supporting events in local top attractions means that you can enjoy the Festival over more than one evening, experiencing buildings and concerts by candlelight.
The Aims and Objectives of illuminating York 2016:
- Celebrate the transformative power of light in all its forms, from sunlight to artificially generated light – from the flickering flame to the light emitting diode
- Populate an easily followed route at the heart of the city
- Broker new relationships between people and the fabric of the city – to reveal York, and the way people experience it, in a new light
- Provide a creative context for artists, designers, engineers and the creative industries to collaborate in exploring new ways in which light impacts on people and the life of the city
- Seek to achieve its objectives within the context of sustainability
- Contribute to UNESCO International Year of Light and engage with the City of Media Arts

illuminating York will be held 26 to 29 Oct 2016 in York, England. illuminating York is one of the first of its kind in the UK and it continues to pursue new ways of showing this beautiful historic city in a new light. The Festival celebrates light in all of its forms, from the flickering flame to the light emitting diode. illuminating York invites you to discover the city in a new light, to experience the magical properties of light and be moved by what these illuminations reveal in our surroundings and in ourselves. illuminating York can be experienced in any order and is designed for visitors to be able to jump in and out of the trail, this may be over one evening or across the duration of the festival. Follow the dotted pink line on the map to experience the festival highlights. Illuminating York originated as a major lighting celebration in support of the evening economy and has progressively become a widely appreciated cultural event for the city. It now delivers a two-fold aim; enhancing cultural life in the city in general and providing a high profile creative event, using contemporary lighting and projection techniques to draw further attention to key city landmarks. illuminating York is an event and I like events...
