Lights in Alingsas will be held 25 Sep to 01 Oct 2020 in Alingsas, Sweden. Lights in Alingsas brings the small Swedish town just outside Gothenburg to the forefront of lighting design through its annual workshop and festival. Once a year in the darkness of the Swedish winter, there is one place that shines. In the west of Sweden lies the small town of Alingsås with its 40,000 inhabitants. Since the turn of the century its buildings, parks, lakes and playgrounds have been lit up every autumn when the international event, the Lights in Alingsås festival, takes place. Lights in Alingsås attracts more than 85 000 visitors every year, and the urban lighting exhibition has become the largest lighting event in public spaces in Northern Europe. Lights in Alingsås is an important meeting point for lighting designers, students and professionals who work with light. The owner of the project is the municipality of Alingsås, who make the project possible through local partners. Lights in Alingsas is an event and I like events...
Today Lights in Alingsås is the largest light event in northern Europe with 80,000 visitors a year. For restaurants, cafés and other businesses in the town, October has become one of the most prosperous months in the year. Experienced lighting designers from all over the world gather in Alingsås along with 60 international students of lighting design and architecture. Together, they create well lit outdoor environments in just six days.
The workshop teaches theoretical and practical knowledge in lighting design. The main aim is to have a professional lighting designer guide the participants through the complete lighting design process of an actual full-scale project. The workshop week lasts for seven days and is supported by the industry with cutting-edge lighting equipment.
Every year, more than 60 lighting designers and architecture students come to Alingsås to participate in the prestigious workshop organized by the Lights in Alingsås festival.
But students come from all over the world and for some of them the trip can be expensive. Grants are therefore awarded to some design students who wish to take part in the Lights in Alingsås workshop.
After a week’s intensive training the students will participate in creating the installations which will make up the Lights in Alingsås light trail.
