The bulk of Kazakhstan’s oil is exported via the CPC and Atyrau-Samara oil pipelines. Kazakhstan’s State Balance of Reserves for the Atyrau region has 87 hydrocarbon fields, including 66 oil fields and 21 petroleum and gas condensate fields. Atyrau is home to Kashagan - one of the largest crude oil fields discovered in the past 40 years which has an estimated 13 billion barrels of oil in proved reserves. New technology solutions are required as the Kashagan field is 15,000 feet below the sea bed, with reservoir pressure exceeding 10,000 pounds per square inch, and lethal levels of hydrogen sulphide; thus, traditional typical fixed or floating drilling platform designs are not suitable. Atyrau is a member of the World Energy Cities Partnership which is committed to addressing challenges though the leadership and cooperation of 18 energy capital cities around the world.
