We are saddened to hear of the passing of legendary Lebanese artist Huguette Caland (Arabic: أوغيت الخوري; born Huguette El Khoury; 1931 - 2019) Over a career of nearly fifty years, Caland made paintings, drawings, sculptures and textiles that reflect a life lived outside of convention. The artist was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1931. Her father, Bechara El-Khoury, became the country’s first president after Lebanon gained independence from France in 1943. In 1964, Caland enrolled as a mature student at the American University in Beirut to study fine art before moving to Paris in 1970 to pursue her art full-time. She later made her home in Venice, California. In Paris, Caland achieved artistic recognition with her exuberant paintings challenged traditional conventions of beauty and desire. The female physique was a recurrent motif in her work. Caland exhibited extensively including at Sharjah Biennial 14, Sharjah (2019); the Institute of Arab and Islamic Art, New York (2018); 57th Venice Biennale (2017); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2016); Prospect.3, New Orleans Biennial (2014); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2013); Institut du monde arabe, Paris (2012); Beirut Exhibition Center (2012); National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC (2010) and Sursock Museum, Beirut (2006). A retrospective of the artist’s work recently concluded Tate St Ives and she was represented by Janine Rubeiz Gallery. #huguettecaland #artist #contemporaryart #femaleartist #beirut #paris
