UEFA Super Cup is one of the most exciting annual football matches organized by UEFA and contested by the reigning champions of the two main European club competitions, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. It takes place at the start of the domestic season, in mid-August, normally on a Tuesday. From 1972 to 1999, the UEFA Super Cup was contested between the winners of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. After the discontinuation of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, it has been contested by the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the winners of the UEFA Cup, which was renamed the UEFA Europa League in 2009. The current holders are Spanish club Barcelona, who won 5–4 against Sevilla in 2015. The 2015 UEFA Super Cup was the 40th UEFA Super Cup. The match featured two Spanish teams Barcelona and Sevilla, the winners of the 2014–15 UEFA Champions League and the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League respectively. It was played at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi, Georgia, on 11 August 2015. This is the first time in tournament history that a Super Cup match is a rematch of a previous edition. The two teams in question met before in the 2006 UEFA Super Cup at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, both qualifying under the same circumstances, when Sevilla won 3–0.

The UEFA Super Cup trophy is retained by UEFA at all times. A full-size replica trophy is awarded to the winning club. Thirty gold medals are presented to the winning club and thirty silver medals to the runners-up.

As of 2012, UEFA awards €2.2 million to the runners-up and €3 million to the winners of the Super Cup.
The 2018 UEFA Super Cup will be the 41st edition of the UEFA Super Cup. The match will feature the winners of the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League and the 2015–16 UEFA Europa League. It will be played at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway, on 9 August 2018.
