SHK+E ESSEN 2028: practical information

SHK+E ESSEN is the trade fair for sanitation, heating, air conditioning and electrics. The next edition is scheduled for 21–24 March 2028 at Messe Essen, Norbertstraße 2, 45131 Essen, Germany. The organiser presents the fair as a meeting place for skilled trades, installation, planning and consulting professionals, with products and expertise spanning water, heat, air and electrical building systems.

For visitors, the value is not simply the number of product categories. The fair can help you compare equipment and components that may sit within the same building project, examine how a solution fits your work and identify questions for suppliers. Installers may focus on practical product specifications; planners may compare system approaches; wholesalers and procurement teams may assess ranges and supplier fit; operators may investigate options for buildings they manage. A focused visit begins with a defined requirement and ends with documented follow-up actions.

Why SHK+E ESSEN matters to the building-services sector

Compare connected systems

Sanitation, heating, ventilation, refrigeration and electrical controls are distinct disciplines, but a building project can bring them together. SHK+E ESSEN covers products from sanitary fittings, drinking-water and drainage systems through heating equipment, heat pumps, air treatment, refrigeration, pipes, measurement and control. That breadth gives visitors a setting to compare related product groups and consider compatibility, installation, maintenance and service questions across a project.

Review products with a professional purpose

The organiser’s 2026 review reported 350 exhibitors from 16 countries. It also reported more than 30,000 registered trade visitors, including estimates for the final day. These figures describe the 2026 edition, not a forecast for 2028. At the 2026 fair, the organiser reported that 70 per cent of visitors had purchasing or procurement authority. This suggests that visitors may find a substantial commercial audience alongside technical specialists, but it does not guarantee access to any particular buyer or business result.

Connect product discovery with industry discussion

Messe Essen reported expert forums and special exhibitions at the 2026 edition, addressing key topics and supporting professional exchange. These are historical examples, not a confirmed programme for 2028. The product range remains the practical starting point: decide which systems matter to your work, then use any confirmed talks or special areas announced for 2028 to add context to supplier and technical discussions.

Who should visit SHK+E ESSEN?

Sanitation, heating and ventilation trades

Installers and service professionals can use the fair to review products relevant to jobs they carry out: sanitary fittings, drinking-water systems, heating equipment, ventilation components, tools and workshop equipment. Before attending, note the types of systems you install, the constraints that recur on site and any service issues you want to solve. Compare more than the headline specification: ask about installation conditions, compatibility with existing equipment, commissioning, maintenance access, replacement parts and technical support.

  • Compare fittings, pipework, pumps, controls and installation tools against the work you undertake.
  • Ask suppliers to clarify system requirements, interfaces and maintenance needs.
  • Record model details and the next information you need, such as technical documents or service terms.

Building-services engineers, planners and consultants

For technical planners and consultants, the event’s mix of heating, sanitation, ventilation, refrigeration and building-control categories can support early-stage option review. Bring project requirements rather than relying on general product impressions: performance needs, space constraints, system interfaces, operating conditions and the intended maintenance model. Use supplier conversations to identify which claims need engineering documentation or project-specific calculations before a specification is fixed.

  • Compare system architecture and control approaches against the project brief.
  • Ask which components and interfaces must be coordinated across trades.
  • Separate preliminary product information from evidence needed for design approval.

Wholesalers, purchasing teams and procurement professionals

The organiser reported that 70 per cent of 2026 visitors held purchasing or procurement authority. For buyers and wholesalers, that makes assortment, supply terms and supplier capability useful themes to investigate. Prepare a shortlist of categories where you need alternatives or a stronger range, and compare product coverage, technical documentation, service arrangements and fit with your existing customers. Treat a conversation as the start of evaluation, not as a completed commercial decision.

  • Identify product groups where a second source or a different technical tier would be useful.
  • Compare the supplier’s coverage, support model and documentation requirements.
  • Record questions about availability, ordering conditions and after-sales responsibilities for follow-up.

Property, housing, hospital and care-facility operators

The 2026 organiser review noted attendees from real-estate and housing organisations, hospitals and care facilities. Operators can focus on systems that affect building operation, refurbishment and maintenance: heating, hot water, sanitary facilities, ventilation, controls and relevant service equipment. Bring the building type, system age, operational constraints and maintenance priorities. Product suitability depends on the specific site, so use discussions to identify what would need technical assessment before any purchase or retrofit decision.

  • Compare options against building use, continuity requirements and maintenance access.
  • Ask how controls and components can integrate with the systems already installed.
  • Capture information for a later review with facilities, engineering and procurement colleagues.

What can you find at SHK+E ESSEN?

Sanitation, drinking water and drainage

The official exhibition areas include sanitary fittings, shower partitions, bathroom furniture and accessories, drinking-water systems, drainage technology and preliminary-wall installation. Visitors can compare products by application, installation method, material, service access and compatibility with the project’s plumbing design. Water treatment also has a dedicated range that includes filters, softening and dosing, membrane technology and disinfection. Ask suppliers which operating conditions and maintenance steps apply to the particular system rather than assuming that products in one category are interchangeable.

Heating, heat pumps and renewable energy

Heating technology covers heat generation and emission, fittings, exhaust and chimney technology, storage, heat distribution, controls and digital heating. The official areas also list heat pumps, combined heat and power, solar technology, fuel cells and solid-fuel boilers or stoves. These categories can help installers, planners and buyers compare different equipment families, but a system’s suitability depends on the building, energy design, operating requirements and current technical rules. Bring the relevant project constraints and ask which documentation supports performance and compatibility claims.

Air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration

Product groups include exhaust-air systems, central supply and exhaust systems, fans and components, heat recovery and air treatment. Refrigeration covers plants and machines, chillers, chilled ceilings, pipe systems and components, joining technology, sealants, fittings, and refrigeration and air-conditioning tools. For technical visitors, useful questions concern capacity, control interfaces, installation environment, service access and the project requirements each product is designed to meet. Compare systems against the intended application rather than relying on category labels alone.

Electrical engineering, building controls and software

The exhibition areas identify hybrid heating and heat pumps, photovoltaics, energy management, battery storage and wallboxes under electrical engineering. Building instrumentation and measurement control includes regulators, controllers, display and recording equipment, and components for measurement-value processing. IT solutions include business, commercial and technical software as well as hardware. Visitors evaluating connected systems may want to establish how equipment exchanges information, what control functions are provided and which technical interfaces need to be checked before specifying a solution.

Pipes, tools, factory equipment and services

Pipe and component categories include gas, water, wastewater, media and heating systems. Tools and factory equipment span operation, storage and assembly systems, fastening technology, tools, workshop equipment, cleaning equipment and utility vehicles or facilities. The service categories include training and education, energy delivery and consulting, trade press, facility management and contracting, associations and other services. This breadth makes the fair relevant beyond equipment purchasing: visitors can also investigate support, training and operational resources, subject to confirming the specific providers and services available.

What makes SHK+E ESSEN different?

Its defining feature is the combination of sanitation, heating, air conditioning and electrical building-services categories in one trade-fair setting. The official product areas extend from bathroom and drinking-water technology to heat pumps, renewable energy, refrigeration, controls, software and workshop tools. That cross-category structure can help professionals examine connections between systems rather than treating each purchase as an isolated product choice.

The organiser’s reported 2026 visitor profile adds a commercial dimension: purchasing authority was reported among 70 per cent of visitors, while the audience included trades, technical planners, wholesale, property and institutional operators. At that edition, heating technology attracted reported interest from 61 per cent of visitors; sanitation installation and technology and drinking water each attracted 36 per cent. More than one in three visitors was also reported to have an interest in sanitary fixtures and fittings. These figures describe the 2026 audience and do not promise that the same profile or interests will recur in 2028.

For a visitor, the practical distinction is the opportunity to connect product comparison with a real installation, specification, purchasing or operating question. The more clearly you define that question, the easier it is to decide which categories deserve time and which supplier discussions warrant follow-up.

What should you try to achieve at SHK+E ESSEN?

If you install or service building systems

Set an objective such as: Compare three options for a recurring installation or service problem and record the compatibility and maintenance questions that remain. Select a product family before you arrive, then compare specifications, interfaces, commissioning requirements and service arrangements. Avoid collecting brochures without recording what problem each product may address.

If you plan or engineer projects

Set an objective such as: Identify the system interfaces that need verification before the next design decision. Focus on the products and controls relevant to your building type, then ask suppliers for the technical evidence needed to assess performance, compatibility and applicable requirements. Keep a clear distinction between an introductory discussion and project-ready design information.

If you buy or distribute products

Set an objective such as: Build a comparison of suppliers for one priority category, including product coverage and service support. Decide which range gaps, customer requests or sourcing questions matter most. For every promising conversation, note the product family, intended customer, commercial question and next information required. A fair visit can support evaluation, but terms and availability must be confirmed directly.

If you manage buildings or facilities

Set an objective such as: Prepare a shortlist of system options and questions for a later site-specific assessment. Bring the building’s operational priorities, maintenance constraints and relevant system details. Use discussions to identify possible approaches and the technical information needed for your engineers, contractors or procurement colleagues to assess them.

How to prepare before SHK+E ESSEN

1. Define the decision or question

Write down why you are attending: sourcing a component, comparing a system, evaluating a supplier, reviewing controls or learning about a product category. Add the application, building type or project stage. A specific question helps you distinguish a useful technical conversation from a general product introduction.

2. Map the relevant product areas

Use the official product categories to identify the areas that match your objective. For example, a heating retrofit may involve heat generation, heat distribution, controls, pipes and electrical energy management. A water-system project may involve sanitary equipment, drinking-water treatment, drainage and installation systems. These are starting points for planning, not a promise that every combination will be represented by a particular exhibitor.

3. Check the current exhibitor information

The organiser’s site currently links to an exhibitor list labelled for 2026. Check the official site again for a 2028 directory before building a company-by-company visit plan. When the current list is available, shortlist relevant suppliers and note why each one matters. Do not assume an older exhibitor list represents the companies attending the next edition.

4. Prepare technical and commercial questions

For heating and heat-pump systems, ask about system configuration, controls, interfaces, commissioning, maintenance and supporting technical documentation. For sanitation and drinking-water products, ask about installation conditions, water quality, service access, components and compatibility. For ventilation or refrigeration, clarify operating conditions, controls, installation needs and maintenance. Buyers should add questions about range, service, ordering and after-sales support. Adapt these prompts to the product and project; no generic question replaces a technical review.

5. Prioritise meetings and evidence

Classify target discussions as essential, useful or optional. Reserve time for the products most closely connected to your objective, and leave room for adjacent categories that may solve a related problem. Decide in advance what evidence you need after each conversation: a technical sheet, interface specification, compliance information, maintenance guidance or a commercial proposal. Confirm any appointment or exhibitor contact directly with the organiser or supplier.

6. Plan a useful record

Use a consistent note for each discussion: Company or contact; product; intended application; specification or question; evidence promised; next action and owner. If colleagues are attending, agree how you will share findings and avoid duplicating the same supplier questions. Keep technical claims, provisional statements and verified documents clearly separated.

How to make the most of the fair

Start with the categories that match your primary objective, then move to connected systems only where they can affect the decision. A visitor sourcing a heating component might compare distribution, controls and system interfaces; a facilities operator could look at equipment alongside service access and maintenance. This keeps exploration anchored in practical requirements without excluding useful adjacent products.

At each stand or conversation, establish the product’s intended use, the constraints it assumes and the evidence available. Ask how it works with existing equipment, which parts must be specified together and what information is needed to assess installation or servicing. If a claim depends on a particular building, operating condition or configuration, record that dependency rather than treating it as universal.

Use short notes rather than relying on memory. Record product names and model references exactly as supplied, together with the representative’s answer and any follow-up document. Before leaving a conversation, confirm the next action and who will take it. This turns a product overview into an organised evaluation process.

Beyond the exhibition floor

Messe Essen reported that the 2026 edition included expert forums and special exhibitions addressing industry topics. The available official review does not identify the individual sessions in enough detail to recommend a particular forum, and the 2028 programme was not confirmed in the pages checked. Review the organiser’s latest programme before travelling and select sessions only after their subjects, timing and access conditions are published.

If a 2028 forum or special area is announced, connect it to a decision you need to make: a technical issue, a regulatory question, workforce development or an industry trend. Note what evidence or follow-up would make the session useful. Treat the 2026 format as historical context, not as a promise that the same sessions or special areas will return.

Build useful professional conversations

SHK+E ESSEN brings together trades, planning and consulting professionals, wholesalers, buyers and people from building operations. A useful introduction can be brief: explain your role, the systems or product categories you work with and the question you are trying to answer. Then ask a focused question that gives the other person enough context to respond.

For an installer, that context might be a recurring installation constraint; for a planner, a system interface or project requirement; for a wholesaler, a range or service gap; for an operator, a maintenance or refurbishment priority. Avoid treating a general conversation as confirmation of product suitability. Capture the specific information offered and agree what documentation or discussion should follow.

Where several colleagues attend, divide responsibilities by category or objective and bring the findings together at the end of each day. A shared record can show where suppliers gave comparable answers, where specifications differ and which claims still need independent review. The organiser’s 2026 visitor survey reported substantial purchasing authority, but individual access, meetings and commercial outcomes are not guaranteed.

Travelling to SHK+E ESSEN

The organiser’s arrival information gives the navigation address as Norbertstraße 2, 45131 Essen. For drivers, it directs visitors via the A52, A3, A40 and A42 motorways and says exhibition-centre signs lead to the site. The page describes parking at the fairground and a park-and-ride system. Check the organiser’s current arrival and parking instructions before setting out, as access arrangements can change.

The official site lists different opening hours by day: Tuesday to Thursday, 09:00–17:00; Friday, 09:00–15:00. The 2028 dates run from Tuesday through Friday, so plan your arrival and daily priorities around the published schedule. Confirm the current details with the organiser before travel. The event page presents visitor registration for 2028, but the pages reviewed did not establish ticket prices or all registration conditions.

One day or several at SHK+E ESSEN?

The fair runs across four days. How long you need depends on the number of product categories relevant to your work, the breadth of your project and whether you intend to attend confirmed programme sessions.

A focused single-day visit

One day may suit visitors with a defined product or supplier question. Prioritise the relevant category, schedule essential conversations and leave time to compare details. A short visit is less suited to broad exploration across multiple systems or a programme schedule that spans the day.

More than one day

Additional time may help buyers comparing several product ranges, technical teams reviewing connected building systems or operators covering different facility needs. Use one part of the visit for core suppliers and another for adjacent categories or confirmed sessions. The value of a longer visit depends on a concrete agenda, not simply time spent on site.

Bring a real project question

If you are assessing a building-services project, prepare a short brief before you attend. Include the building type and use, project stage, system or component under consideration, known interfaces, operating constraints and the decision you need to make. For a retrofit, record relevant existing equipment and any known space or maintenance limitations. For new planning, note the design requirements and information still outstanding.

Use the brief to ask suppliers what can be established at the fair and what requires a site survey, calculation or written specification. Do not share confidential building or client information unless you are authorised to do so. Product compatibility, performance and regulatory suitability must be assessed for the actual project and current requirements.

After SHK+E ESSEN: turn notes into decisions

Sort contacts and information

After the fair, group each conversation by urgency: immediate project need, potential future option or general market information. Match every contact to the product, specification and next step recorded during the visit. Request only the material needed to continue your evaluation, such as technical documents, operating instructions, interface details or commercial information.

Compare before committing

Review competing products against the same criteria. For technical options, compare system fit, interfaces, installation assumptions, maintenance and supporting documentation. For purchasing decisions, check product coverage, service arrangements and commercial conditions directly with the supplier. Where a product affects several building systems, involve the relevant engineering, installation, facilities and procurement colleagues.

Follow up with a clear action

Send a concise follow-up that identifies the discussion and the information required. Assign an owner and a date for the next review. Update your shortlist when evidence arrives, and mark any unresolved performance, compliance, delivery or support question. A fair can start a useful supplier evaluation, but any purchase, specification or partnership depends on subsequent due diligence.

Who should consider exhibiting at SHK+E ESSEN?

The official product areas point to manufacturers, suppliers and service providers working across sanitary fittings, drinking-water and drainage systems, heating, heat pumps, renewable energy, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, pipes, controls, electrical technology, software, tools and workshop equipment. Companies considering a stand should identify the product groups that match the show and the professional audiences they want to reach.

Messe Essen’s official press review reported 350 exhibitors from 16 countries at the 2026 fair. At that edition, the organiser said about 93 per cent of exhibiting companies reported reaching all or some of their key target groups. These are organiser-reported historical figures, not a guarantee of outcomes at the next edition. Exhibitors can prepare by defining the technical or commercial objective of participation, the evidence and demonstrations they can provide, and the follow-up process for enquiries.

The organiser’s 2026 review stated that exhibitor registration documents for 2028 were available online. Check the current exhibitor information directly with Messe Essen for application conditions, deadlines, stand options and costs; these details were not established in the pages reviewed. Consider whether the audience and product categories suit your offer before committing resources.

Is SHK+E ESSEN worth visiting?

The fair is most useful for professionals with a defined reason to review sanitation, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, electrical building systems or related tools and services. Its official categories support both focused product searches and broader consideration of connected building systems. The organiser’s 2026 audience profile documents participation from trades, planning and consulting, wholesale, procurement, property and institutional operations.

Visitors who arrive with a project brief, a supplier shortlist or a technical question are better placed to compare products and capture actionable information than those who browse without priorities. The organiser’s previous-edition figures can help indicate the scale and audience profile, but they do not guarantee a particular exhibitor list, meeting, product fit or business result in 2028. Confirm current programme, directory and practical arrangements before making plans.

Building-services opportunities in Germany

Market size and demand

The German Heat Pump Association (BWP) reported that 299,000 space-heating heat pumps were sold in Germany in 2025, a 55 per cent increase on the previous year. BWP also reported that heat pumps made up nearly half of all heating generators sold that year, and that about 80 per cent of heat-pump sales were for existing buildings. These are heat-pump indicators, not measures of the entire sanitation, HVAC or building-services market. They provide a dated demand signal for one product family represented at SHK+E ESSEN.

Market drivers and commercial opportunities

The BWP account links the 2025 sales increase to greater consumer confidence in heat-pump performance and reports over 288,000 heat-pump funding approvals in 2025. It also notes that the industry regarded stable policy conditions and heating support as important; this was the association’s view at publication and should not be read as confirmation of current programme terms. The figures suggest areas for investigation, not guaranteed demand or profitability.

  • Heating and retrofit systems: installers, distributors and equipment suppliers may compare heat pumps, hybrid systems, controls and related components against refurbishment needs. Product fit, building conditions and current policy must be checked case by case.
  • Hydronic and electrical components: buyers may assess pipes, pumps, storage, measurement and energy-management products for their role in heat-pump systems. The national sales indicator does not establish demand for any individual component.
  • Existing-building applications: suppliers and technical planners may explore solutions for retrofit projects, where BWP says most heat-pump sales occurred in 2025. Site constraints, system design and installation capability remain material barriers.

Regulations and market-entry conditions

For consumer products within its scope, the EU General Product Safety Regulation has applied since 13 December 2024 and operates alongside more specific product legislation. Whether it applies to a particular sanitary or building-services product depends on the product and its intended use; companies should identify the relevant category-specific rules and verify current requirements before placing a product on the market. No current heat-pump subsidy eligibility or detailed product-certification conditions were established for this guide.

What this may mean for exhibitors

Heating, heat-pump, controls and component exhibitors may use the reported 2025 market figures to frame questions about retrofit applications, customer requirements and distributor interest. The figures do not establish a likely order, buyer access or product-level demand. Companies should validate technical fit, applicable rules, competition and commercial terms independently.

What this may mean for visitors

Installers, planners, wholesalers and building operators may use the fair to compare heat-pump-related systems and ask how products fit a specific building or purchasing brief. The wider product categories also support comparison of water, ventilation, control and electrical components. Germany’s heat-pump figures are a starting point for questions, not a substitute for site-level assessment or current regulatory advice.
